Show Up Southend

REVIEW - PRINCESS ESSEX

Last week we were delighted to get the chance to see some brand new theatre! Not often we get to see new writing in Southend so we were really looking forward to it especially as the story was based in Southend too! Princess Essex, written by Anne Odeke, is based on the true story of Princess Dinubolu. Who was the first black woman to compete in a beauty pageant.

“I throughly enjoyed last night’s performance of Princess Essex at the Balmoral Community Centre. The show was really well written and funny and the performance was excellent with some really great physical comedy. The subject matter was engaging and I came away feeling that I had learnt something about local black female Southend history that I didn’t know before.”
